Northern Ghana – Trip 1 Review

We returned from our trip to Northern Ghana and Lake Volta region with broken hearts and fresh inspiration to serve those in need of both spiritual truth and basic life sustaining needs. In the north they say, “water is life.” In John 4 Jesus tells the woman at well, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” Real life, endless life, more and better life, harmony with God life.

It’s now rainy season, dry season is coming. Teamwork is essential. The needs for water are great. We are now praying and seeking partnerships for water wells. Please pray.

People matter to God. People matter to us. God loved, God Gave. We go because He came, we give because He gave…

Let us not become weary

Dear Friends,

We recently received the good news that our official Tax Exempt status has been approved. This was good news as we trusted God, followed His leading, and by faith, returned to Africa. This is encouraging news – thank you God news. We have better news than that, better news than anything else imaginable to share with all the world. The Good News, the Message that God loved and God gave and now a Right Standing, a right relationship with God – comes FROM GOD, it doesn’t come from religion, the law, effort, goodness or meeting any requirements. There is a requirement … and it has already been met on our behalf. Sin, struggle, hurt, pain, confusion, disappointment, lack of understanding, no longer has to keep us alienated or separated from God. Jesus took the barrier out of the equation and offers a right standing, a right relationship with God, which comes from God, to Everybody…to All who want it and accept it. That is The News, The Good News: that know one can figure out or discover on their own unless someone tells them. Romans 10:14-17 That is why we are here. As our granddaughter Lyric would say…we need to “Show and Tell”. Please pray with us that we could effectively live and share with the people of Ghana. Effectively “Show & Tell.”

The last month has been full; relational and wonderful – difficult, encouraging – tiring: 2 births, 2 naming ceremonies, an engagement and a wedding, friends who are hurting and struggling; some are progressing on the journey towards full devotion, others are wrestling with full surrender vs. cultural issues. Siham and two people from the fellowship volunteered at a local orphanage. We traveled a number of times out to other areas. We have had a number of movie nights, where we have people over and watch movies on the laptop: Facing the giants, Passion of the Christ, Ultimate Gift, Something to sing about, a collection of stories about Muslims who have followed Jesus under great persecution and trials, etc. We have had folks stay the night 2-3 times a week and every Sunday for 2 months.

Relational ministry is what we believe we are called to. It is mostly where we see God invite us into His work, where we watch Him work, and where we see true life change happening. It is the most wonderful and demanding lifestyle we have known. We have been reminded lately of how much we are still adjusting and how much we still need to adjust and learn.

This past Sunday we had 28 for dinner after fellowship, a lot of work, especially for Siham. 5 of our new friends are college students from California. It was a new experience for them, they said that they were coming back next Sunday and bringing more friends. Folks have been taking more ownership in our gathering, which we love, but this week was very much like a church service for church people. Please pray for us as we seek to tone down this new church-y-ness of the home fellowship without hurting or discouraging friends who are getting fired up about the Lord. We believe we are here to reach out to unchurched folks in relevant, inviting, engaging ways.

Since coming we have seen 3 people turn to the Lord, two of them attending church. Our brother who turned from another faith, continues to disciple with us and is a part of the fellowship, members of his family have also come. You are currently helping him go to a 3-month school called the Institute of Creativity. The school is part of The Widow Development Foundation, begun by 2 of our new friends who are African missionaries from Nigeria. We have visited 2 of the school locations and we are praying about helping with some of their needs. The location where our new brother meets for the I.O.C. is also a nursery through 9th grade school, which is struggling. The WDF is stepping into the management of this school facility on Sept 1, with the hope and vision to save and develop it. Please pray with us for discernment and direction in this.

Pastor Emmanuel and students

God willing, on Sept 1, we will be taking an 11 day journey to the far North of Ghana and to the most remote and impoverished areas. We will be traveling with a family who is here from Indiana, and connecting with another missionary family up north who is working against child trafficking. There will be many off road – bush miles. Please pray with us about the details and provision for this trip.

We now eat “plenty” local food: food from friends, market, local shops, etc.. Meals are a great way to connect and break down walls and barriers. We are both feeling mostly well, with some energy level fluctuations. Siham is undergoing a series of blood work, urinalysis, etc. tests. Gary has lost over 30 lbs although he feels well and is not symptomatic. Please pray for continued health and strength. Thank you for your love, support and prayers. We could not be here without your sacrifices. We believe that our collective work and sacrifice will never be in vain. 1 Cor. 15:58 – Galatians 6:9

Money Matters

Dear Friends,

The rains have come and so have the mud, the bugs and the wet laundry. When the weather is dry, laundry will dry in minutes on the line, even with the humidity. During rainy season, well that is another story. When it rains, which is often and heavy from now until August, things move slow and even shut down, similar to MI in the winter. God has recently provided us with a 1997  Hyundai Galloper. It was by far the most cost effective vehicle for $4,000.00 U.S. (vehicles are very expensive here because if import costs), not so pretty but pretty strong. Currently it has no A/C, windshield washer, functional radio, and a few other “petty” things (petty – is how our friends refer to small things). We have been doing some small work on it to eliminate the oil leakages and broken muffler, etc. We are grateful for it and also thankful that it is an off road vehicle. The roads in our area are very rough right now, we mostly creep around the neighborhood in 1st gear… and hold on …to the handles and straps.

We are continuing to meet neighbors and build friendships. We are also learning more language. When we speak to the Ghanaian people in one of their languages they light up, smile, laugh, engage and are excited and willing to teach us more and invite us to “come” or “stay”. There is still much to learn about the culture and worldview. Our love for the Ghanaian people continues to grow and humble us.

Our new brother is continuing  to learn how to “follow Jesus” and “His way”.  Learning to trust and obey is not without pressure, challenges and opposition. Please pray for him to be “strengthened with power in his inner being.” We believe that making the transition from dependency on ourselves, our traditions and family of origin to dependency on God, is much the same for all of us. “There is nothing new under the sun.”

                                A few stories involving… money:

Most often, money  “tells” where our hearts really are, where our “focus” really is.

A young lady who sells phone units (time credits) in our neighborhood, called the other day. She went to a local carpenter we know and asked for our phone #. She said that when we were there earlier that morning, we dropped a bill and that she had it for us. This is uncommon and encouraging. 5 Ghana cedi’s is a day’s pay for most.

A man received payment for his work with us, and he gave back a portion as a gift. We were able to pass the gift on to another who needed help.  Pay it Forward“excel in the grace of giving.”

–     Another family offered to pay back money to a company that had not asked for the repayment. Most likely, they could have “gotten off “or “gotten away”, from paying it back. They decided to follow God and use complete integrity, regardless of the outcome. The lender was surprised they had asked and informed that he had already decided to dismissed the matter. Again, this is uncommon for both parties. “There is a way that seems right to a man but in the end it leads to death.”

Two families that are dear to us had a serious issue come between them,  we were asked by both to pray, help and mediate. With much prayer, love and caution… we did:

One of the families is of another faith. One of them recently accepted Christ and some of the family have joined in the Sunday afternoon home study. The issue was big and painful. Tradition and law says that punishment and compensation was owed, expected, and it was offered. We watched the offended family respond with love, mercy and grace. “The law came through Moses, Grace came through Jesus Christ.” They forgave the offender and asked for reasonable accountability to fix the problem (a sin problem), and not just to punish it. They also refused the monetary compensation, not wanting “unblessed money”. This action had a profound affect on everyone. The family that returned the compensation money is a poor family, but they were seeking to honor God. The offender was awestruck, repented in brokenness and humility and agreed to accountability and counseling, which has begun. We all prayed and thanked God together. This was an amazing display of God working in all who were present. “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Please pray with us for the salvation and healing of all involved. Please continue to pray for the meetings at our house. We are praying and laboring for a community of disciples. We believe that our presence is making a difference in this community.

Thank you for praying and giving to our work here. Through an intense season of challenge, change, transition and stretching; God has saved lives, sustained and met our needs. Although, the changes and transition –   “on – paper”, would not confirm it.       “Where God guides, He provides.”

Thank you for investing in us so that we can live among the people of Ghana; love them, serve them and God willing be a light, His light.

“In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.” May His light shine…in spite of us!

Please remember our new brothers and us in your prayers. We need your help and prayer support. Even as we see God at work, the work is not without struggle and fierce opposition.

In Him,

“Lost but now found!”

Greetings from Ghana,

It is very hot these days, even the Ghanaians are saying, “It’s so hot, we wish the rain will come.”  Malaria cases are “plenty”, a couple of our friends have been very sick. The heat has been rather extreme lately and dehydration makes us more susceptible to malaria. In the past, this disease was incurable and untreatable. Many of the first missionaries died from it. It is still the most prevalent disease on the planet, and more people die every year from it than any other sickness.  “Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, He got us into life!” Romans 5 the Message

Power & water have been inconsistent lately. When Jesus is at Jacobs well in the desert talking with an outcast, “unclean” woman, He speaks of “living water.” He says, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life”…”Sir give me this water so I wont get thirsty,,,”  He then speaks of true worship, true worshipers, worshiping in spirit and in truth. Jesus then tells her who he is. She goes and tells the people to come and see; go and tell… come and see,…He is the one!

Jesus often begins his communications with “I tell you the truth”, or “You have heard it said, but I tell you”,,, It’s like he is saying to us, You think you know – the truth, the way it is, the way it should be, you think you know God and His ways but you do not. Listen close, I am about to blow your mind with profound simplicity, the truth of God in it’s most honest, revealed and livable way. “I am the truth”…. “Follow Me!”

Our new brother continues to be in awe of God and how “a righteousness from God, apart from the law has been made known, and this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Having been a Muslim until two weeks ago, He is very familiar with “the law”. He’s now going public with his faith and decision. This young man can speak nine languages, among them including Arabic and French. He has a very keen mind and when we review scriptures which we have previously read he can quote much from memory and explain meaning in his own simple and profound words. He continues to help with whatever work or outreach we are doing, even misc. volunteer work for neighbors, and he is an excellent, thoughtful worker. He has been saying, “Jesus’ living water is welling up inside me and I often cannot contain my great joy.”  He has been having discussions with his Muslim friends and giving “the reason for his hope and joy.” Those around him are noticing his newly found gratitude, humility and passion for God. We had a group of seven of us go to church Sunday. The number of folks waiting to begin the home study continues to grow, we have ordered fifty chairs to start. Please continue to pray for the “connecting and preparing” of the soil.

Our new brother also had Malaria last week, it hit him hard and fast. He stayed with us through this time and in the midst of trial, he saw more of the love of Christ at work in his life. He has made a great recovery and we are continuing to spend time every morning and evening seeking God together. God has given us the opportunity to really do life together for a season, and some wonderful missionary friends have also made the effort to love and build him up. PTL!  He now knows, that it is through your giving and prayers, that we are here and the Good News has come to him. He knows that many of you have been praying for him. He asked us to tell you, “Thank you from all his heart and give thanks to God, this son of mine was lost and now found, dead but now alive.”  Simple, profound, deep and beautiful!

He has begun talking about the need for us to go north, into the more remote regions where they have not had opportunity to hear the good news or taste the living water. Who better to reach out to a people group than one of their own, especially someone who has been transformed by our Lord and Savior!  We think that when we do get a vehicle, it should be a Land Rover or a similar “bush vehicle”. Although English is commonly spoken, we believe that we must learn Twi, the most common local language, so that we can speak the true heart language of the Ghanaians.

Please continue to pray for our new brother’s protection, good soil in his heart and for his commitment of full devotion to Christ.

– that we will live and love in such a way that people see Jesus, and seek God.

                        – clear leading and timing for reaching out – farther.

 In Him,

           Gary & Siham

Life that is truly life

Dear Friends,

A friend wrote us of his recent mission trip, here is one of his observations. “Unlike any trip I have ever been on, I felt as if I was coming home FROM reality, not coming home TO it.  Being there, everything felt back to normal.  It was great.”

Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Jesus often talked of “the kingdom of heaven” in present tense, He said, “the kingdom of heaven is upon you”, right now. At the end of 1 Timothy it says, “so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” It seems that we (and some of the local community) have recently seen some of “the kingdom life” “life that is truly life.” The way it really is, or at least the way it could be, should be. “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

God is continuing to connect us with many new people and He is moving among them, it’s quite humbling and amazing. God is also connecting us with a good number of other missionaries and ministries. The man who is working with Gary (former muslim – praise God!), is confessing Jesus; as Lord and savior of the world, as his own savior and that “the word became flesh, and made His dwelling among us.” He has committed his life to Christ and is experiencing great joy and freedom. We are currently studying the gospel of John, God is blowing his mind and renewing his spirit, his hope and experience of life…”born again”. It’s sacred and beautiful to hear him praising Jesus and singing worship to Him while he works. We traveled to his home in another area and met his mom and siblings after going to church and having a great time of worship and fellowship. He says that he wants to be a “true follower and servant of Christ, living the lifestyle not just talking about Jesus.” Please pray for his protection and for “good soil” as he is beginning to reach out and love others, “in His name”.

Gary has also talked with a local Emam (Muslim cleric), and we believe that God is moving in his heart. He has been watching us doing volunteer jobs for neighbors and in the community. He is shocked, bewildered and curious, as he has not seen Jesus’ radical love and actions before. He has begun to come around often and watch and smile and nod in approval. He initially recoiled and left quickly when Gary responded to his questions/comments about Jesus. Lately he bows in respect as Gary does for him. “Be prepared to give an answer for the hope that you have, but do this with gentleness and respect.”  Jesus said, “You diligently study the scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” Please pray with us, that the Emam and his followers would not “refuse to come to Him to have life”, but that they will come – and LIVE!  In this verse we see that Jesus does not say come and have life, but that we must come “TO” have life. We must come “To” Jesus in order “To” have life… No Jesus – No life, Know Jesus – Know life!

We have been studying and reflecting on John 15 a lot these days. Jesus talking about the vine, branches, pruning and fruit. He prunes us so we will bear fruit, prunes us some more so we will bear more fruit, then prunes more so we will bear fruit that will last. Pruning involves cutting and waiting, and pulling and waiting, and tie-ing and waiting…and then – there it is…”Fruit”, then “Much Fruit”, then “Lasting Fruit”. We often do not know exactly what God is doing, or why, or how long it will last, but we continue to trust His hand more than before. How about you? Any unfruitful branches been chopped off lately? Any branches being pruned; cut and pulled back, to bear fruit or more fruit? It hurts, but it is so worth it. Our Father the vinedresser and gardener knows what He is doing. “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.”

“You did not choose me, I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last.”

No doubt we are already a little fruity, or maybe “plenty” fruity,,, don’t think that was what He meant.-ha-ha-ha…

“Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life.”

Please pray with us for “fruit that will last.”

  In Him,

               Gary & Siham

Please Pray With us

Hello from Ghana,

Siham is in MI for a couple more weeks before rejoining Gary in Ghana. Please pray for her time with family, friends and safe travel.

Our neighbor, who recently accepted Christ, is continuing to attend church. We mentioned a couple of men a few weeks ago who expressed interest in seeking God. Gary continues to grow in relationship with them. He and the young man, who met and worked on a local jobsite, are currently working together and studying the bible daily. This Muslim man has expressed his desire to accept Christ a number of times. God is opening his heart and mind. Please pray with us for “Good Soil”, a true “turning” and for “full devotion” to Our Lord Jesus. Usually by now, we would have invited him to accept Christ but we feel that we should wait. “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone come to repentance.”

In Acts 2, Peter addresses the crowd in Jerusalem after Jesus has risen. Half way through it he says, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord will be saved.” At the end of his talk “the people were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘brothers, what shall we do?‘” Later in Acts, we see others say, “Brothers, what shall we do to be saved?” We are seeking to be sensitive and alert to the Lord’s timing as the foundation of truth and solid understanding of the gospel takes root and grows.

 Not just decisions, but disciples.

The number of neighbors and people from the community who are waiting for the home study to begin continues to grow. Some are educated and traveled and some have had little experience outside of their own community. We seek to Prepare – Connect – Disciple and Duplicate. (Please see our strategy on the website) We are currently preparing and connecting. Please pray and prepare the ground with us, and pray for our wisdom, discernment, effectiveness and protection.  We have communicated with a number of ministry organizations serving here in Ghana and are praying about how and whom God would like us to help. Please pray for the protection of those whom God is connecting us. “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring Lion looking for someone to devour.”

We had to make a trip back to the states to process out of Agape and take the necessary steps to establish Jasmund Outreach as a non-profit ministry. Please pray with us for the turn around time on the 501(c) (3) status from the IRS. We have taken the next step of faith in the journey. On paper, it would seem, that the flow of resources and provisions have been delayed through this transition, but God has provided everything, in everyway! Your prayers, gifts and sacrifices have met our needs and encouraged us greatly. God has provided for our flights, this months rent and expenses. We cannot adequately express our gratitude to you. We believe we can say with confidence and all humility, that your gifts are making a difference in this world for Jesus.

May God bless you.  “Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in everyway so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” 2 Corinthians 9:10-11

We Go…because He came!
We Give…because He gave!

Dear Friends, thank you for everything.

In Him,

           Gary & Siham

“In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps”

(April Ministry Partner Communication)

After having spent some time in Ghana, it is evident that the Spirit of God is at work! Until recently, we could not say that we felt called to one people group or location in Africa, but rather to where the needs were. We now know that God has put a love, compassion and burden for the Ghanaian people in our hearts,  which can only come from Him. We know that God opened doors, created in-roads and connected us with many who are hungry for Him and need Him. We believe that God led us, and has called us to serve Him in Ghana by continuing to build bridges relationally and spiritually with those people.

At this time, the school project with Agape Gospel Mission has been postponed. God is continuing to prompt us to be available and flexible. As He leads, we will continue to partner with other ministries, missionaries, teams and Churches. To be maximally effective, and to make things as easy as possible for supporters, we have established “Jasmund Outreach” as a non-profit ministry.

“Brothers, choose… from among you [those] who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them” (Acts 6:3). We believe that prayer, accountability and teamwork are essential for effective ministry. As such, God has sent us a team of seasoned believers to support us in these ways, both personally and organizationally. The “Board of Directors” is the governing body of Jasmund Outreach, where the “Spiritual Advisory Team” is a group of volunteers who have been and continue to be committed to us in prayer, accountability, and Godly counsel. The board of directors are: Pastor Steven (Bear) Dauenhauer, Dr. Robert Karl and Pastor Lillian Easterly-Smith. The team of spiritual advisors are: Pastor Michael & Kathy Teston, Mr. John Dage, Dr. Rob Karl, Pastor Lillian Easterly-Smith and Pastor Bear Dauenhauer. You can read more about them on “The Team” page.

Many of you have inquired in the past about supporting us directly. This is now possible, as your financial support can go directly to Jasmund Outreach. Your gifts will soon be tax-exempt, as that status has been applied for and is pending. Once received, all donations from April 2009 on will be tax-exempt. We will send a year-end statement of total gifts to each donor for accounting purposes.

We ask you to redirect your financial support of us through Jasmund Outreach. This can be accomplished by mailing a check or giving online (please see the sidebar). We apologize for the inconvenience of these administrative changes, but are excited about this next step in His adventure!

Please see “The whole earth, and everything in it” (March Archives) to read more of our recent stories and see pictures of people that we will be building relationships with in Ghana!

We “GO”…because He came…We give…because He gave.

“For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory – forever! Amen.”

In Him,

Gary & Siham

“The whole earth is His and everything in it.”

“In his heart a man plans his course but the Lord determines his steps”

Our first month in Ghana has been amazing: Filled with stretching, pruning and prayer; many “in-roads”, opportunities and relationships – Opposition, brokenness and the favor of the Lord. With each new step of obedience and surrender we find the Lord’s gentle hand – providing for us; teaching us and refining us. We heard this phrase recently – “New level – new devil”. As cliché-ish as this sounds, we believe there is some truth in it.

On our 2nd day in Ghana God blessed us with 3 great local friends. God has used them to provide for our every need. In their service to the Lord they have loved and served us like we have never experienced before. We will share more about them and what God is doing in the future. We’ve heard it said that “God loves to dress himself up in human skin”; and with all the doctrinal implications aside, we believe there is truth in this statement.  “…you are the temple of the Holy Spirit”… “you are the body of Christ”… ”you are a dwelling place in which His Spirit lives”… ”but the Father who dwells in me does the works…he who believes in me, will do what I have been doing… and even more…my Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our home in him.”(John 14:10-27) etc…

Gaby, Jenan & Jean Pierre - brothers & sisters
Gaby, Jenan & Jean Pierre - brothers & sisters

God provided a 2 bedroom house in very good condition for $500.00 per month rent. The owner is a former Political Ministry Official who is a brother in The Lord and a respected, influential man. God gave us immediate favor with him. The standard lease/rent in Ghana is a 2 year contract which is paid in full up front, occasionally a 1 year is given. He offered us a 3 month initial deposit with monthly payments, and when we wish to terminate, to give him 3 months notice if possible and just live out the balance of the money or get a refund if necessary. The owner also included a large 15 K generator (strong enough for multiple homes with A/C), 2 beds and a dresser, double water tower/tank, water pump, kitchen cabinets, a/c units and some curtains (usually none of these are included or if they are the price is very high). This is a blessing from God and unheard of in Ghana.

We have lived in the house for a while, with just the bed. Our neighbors, the friends and partners we mentioned earlier, have blessed us with everything we’ve needed. We haven’t been able to ask them for anything, they seem to know and take initiative often times before we even fully recognize a need. God has used them greatly and “He is greatly to be praised”. We still need to furnish the house with appliances, some furniture and a vehicle. We have friends helping with this and are waiting for God’s timing and leading. We care little for these things anymore, as if some of the “things of earth are growing strangely dim.” – “owning nothing yet possessing everything”; yet there is such joy and opportunity to love people in this “shopping” process. “He makes all things new.”

Last week 4 neighbor’s came to church and Sim’on accepted Christ, and wants to be discipled. Disciple’s not just decisions! The entire household has committed to going to church this weekend. A dozen people committed to come to church this weekend and many neighbors are waiting to start home bible study. Gary has had the opportunity to work as a volunteer with some of the local workers, which touched and encouraged them. A muslim young man was so impacted that he asked us if he could come to church with us because he has never met whites like us before; very humbling to hear this kind of thing. “the hope of glory, Christ in you.” He speaks Arabic (and a few other languages), so he also really enjoys connecting with siham. It is very exciting and humbling to see God working in those around us.

Sim'on & Uncle Linford
Sim'on & Uncle Linford

There is a large Lebanese population in Ghana and God has connected us with over a dozen middle eastern folks already. They are so excited to find out siham’s background and there is an instant connection; after all it’s not everyday you meet: a born again Palestinian from Ramallah who went through the six day war, was delivered from a bus bombing, is on fire for God and has a passion for people! (that’s our girl – so proud of her) Siham is building many relationships with both the Ghanaian and Lebanese women. We pray that we can say with confidence and appropriate humility to others; “follow me as I follow Christ”, we pray,,, please pray with us.

“Let your light shine before men, that they will see your good works and praise your Father in heaven.”

We’ve had some experience’s in West Africa and seen those who are “Christians” or “seekers” but not for the sake of following Christ. In Ghana, we are seeing a sincere desire for God. “Look to the fields, they are ripe for harvest”.

Gary and another young man, are developing a friendship. He asked Gary to train him, which opened the door for hearing how gary’s martial art training was competing with his relationship with God and Gary stopped training 20 years ago. After expressing gratitude for being asked, Gary committed to pray and seek God’s heart on this. The other day he asked about prayer and they had a great conversation about how Jesus prayed, what He modeled and taught, and how He prayed in the garden. Not as I will, but what you will”. He then opened up his life and some deep hurts to Gary and his heart has become tender. 3 weeks ago, He was proud of his Islamic stance and now he is not only open to the Bible and to Jesus but he is also asking questions. We already love him and have much compassion for him, please pray for his salvation.

“Learn from me, for i am gentle and humble in heart…”

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus,

Our first week in Ghana:

We arrived on Saturday evening. One of our first experiences was worshiping on Sunday morning with the Agape church family. It was a wonderful celebration service in their new facility, “every tribe and tongue” praising God, about a dozen people gave their lives to Christ. We were overjoyed to see Rick & Donna Whitcomb and 5 of their 6 children. They are the founding missionaries of Agape who have been serving the Lord in Africa for 27 years. They are seasoned and experienced missionaries who are dearly loved and respected. Jesus said…“learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart…” We quickly noticed how loving and gentle they are in their relationships and leadership. The Agape staff, which is quite large, seems to be a reflection of this Christ like Character and modeling.

”Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2

We have observed many qualities of the Ghanaian people and culture: a relationship centered, respectful, people of “community”. Our love for them is growing daily and with each new interaction. We have also observed the affects of sin in this fallen world and the schemes of our enemy, and “we are not unaware of His schemes”. We are reminded that… “He has made everything beautiful in it’s time. He has set eternity in the hearts of men: yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11

Things… “take time” in Africa:
We now have local cell phones and drivers license’s. We are in the process of opening a bank account, yes – the process, maybe one more week till open. It has been determined that we will need to get settled in a house before becoming immersed in the work, and we are house and vehicle shopping. We are currently living at the Agape guest house, which has been wonderfully established and facilitated by Tom & Kathy Newall. God has been so kind and gentle to us in this transition.

WE GET TO SERVE HIM!

We have met many wonderful people and are beginning to build some friendships. Went out to the orphanage twice this week and were immediately filled with love, compassion and vision for these beautiful children; for their future lives and the school building. These children have been rescued by God through Agape; and are being loved, educated and trained.

… African construction is strong… and lasting. “Train up a child in the way he should go…” – “Fruit that will last”

“If building a school brings souls to Christ, we would be fools not to build!”…“Disciples who make disciples”

“When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them,
because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd”
Mathew 9:36

The temperature is apprx 95-100 and fairly humid – we love it – lot’s of sweating. We are learning about local customs and culture and still have much to learn. We are adjusting pretty well. Accra is the most expensive place to live in West Africa, and one of the most costly in Africa. Houses and utilities in our primary area of interest and ministry, range from about $1,200.00 – $1,800.00 monthly, not including furnishing’s. Gallon of milk = $10.00, etc…we are not drinking much milk, besides, Gov. Arnold said, “milk is for babies”. Even God has said, “get off the milk” (“crave pure spiritual milk”)… “solid food is for the mature”…Hebrews 5:12-14

Please pray with us for:
· Additional/continued support for the Agape Children’s Home and the Academy project.
(the project has a dollar for dollar matching funds pledge)
· God’s clear leading and favor for a house and vehicle; the cost and location.
· Planning, organizing, unity and team building for the academy project.
· that we would be “gentle and humble in heart”, reflecting our Lord’s heart.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from becoming polluted by the world.” James 1:27
